39 international passenger trains, which were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have been resumed between Russia and some CIS and Baltic countries. This was announced by the General Director of the Federal Passenger Company (FPK; “daughter” of the “Russian Railways”) Vladimir Pyastolov.
“At the moment, 39 international passenger trains with six countries have resumed running in communication with the CIS and Baltic countries: the Republic of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia. At the same time, FPC trains run only to Belarus and Mongolia. The rest of the international trains form neighboring states,” Mr. Pyastolov told RIA Novosti at the SPIEF. Communication with China, North Korea and Azerbaijan has not yet been resumed.
Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FPC and a number of countries canceled the supervision of passenger trains. Also, due to a decrease in passenger traffic against the backdrop of an unfavorable epidemiological situation, the frequency of running a number of trains on domestic routes was changed. According to Russian Railways, after the introduction of restrictions against the background of the spread of coronavirus in 2020, passenger traffic on the network decreased by 80%.
