By data Rosstat, in January of this year, natural population decline increased by 21.9% compared to January 2023. It amounted to 78,269 people (in January 2023 – 64,219 people). The country’s population as of January 1, 2024 is 146,150.8 thousand people.

The number of births in January of this year decreased by 0.8%, to 103,408 children. The death toll rose 7.9% to 181,677. According to Rosstat, natural population decline in 2023 increased from 495.2 thousand people to 500.3 thousand.

Rosstat data are presented without taking into account statistical information for the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.

At the beginning of 2024, Rosstat presented two options for the demographic forecast for Russia until 2046: high and low. The optimistic version of the forecast assumes an increase in the Russian population by 4.59 million people, to 150.87 million, by the beginning of 2046. According to the pessimistic version, by 2046 the country’s population will decrease by 15.4 million and amount to 130.6 million people.
