NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said at a press conference in the European Parliament on Thursday, September 7, that the discovery of drone debris on Romanian territory cannot be interpreted as a “deliberate attack” by Russia. He emphasized that the alliance does not have confirmed information about the incident and called for waiting for the results of the investigation.
Information about the crash of a drone on Romanian territory was initially disseminated by the official representative of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Oleg Nikolenko, citing data from Ukrainian border guards. On the same day, the publications “Zerkalo Nedeli” and “Izmail City” reported explosions in the port city of Izmail, Odessa region, which is located on the banks of the Danube and borders Romania.
The initial reaction of the Romanian authorities to information about the fall of the drone was limited to denial: the Romanian Ministry of Defense, and subsequently the country’s president, Klaus Iohannis, claimed that no parts of the drone fell on the country’s territory.
However, later the military department of the republic announced the discovery in the area of Plauru (a village on the banks of the Danube, on the other side of the river from the Ukrainian Izmail – Ed.) alleged fragments of a drone that are being studied. TV channels Digi 24 and Antena 3 called the drone “Russian”.
