NATO Secretary General said that only Ukraine can determine the terms of peace

Only Ukraine can determine acceptable conditions for achieving peace, it is not worth freezing the conflict or agreeing to a deal, the terms of which will be dictated by Russia, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.
According to him, after the end of hostilities, the world, in order to become long-term, must be fair.
“Peace cannot mean freezing the conflict or accepting a deal to be dictated by Russia. Only Ukraine alone can determine acceptable conditions,” said Stoltenberg (TASS quote).
The more Ukraine returns territories, “the better cards it will have at the negotiating table,” the NATO Secretary General believes. He also spoke about the prospect of countries joining the alliance, saying that “the future of Ukraine is connected with NATO.” On July 11-12, at the NATO summit in Vilnius, the issue of providing assistance to Ukraine and intensifying political ties will be decided, which will bring the country closer to the standards of the alliance, Stoltenberg added.
In early June, Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswami said that Ukraine have to make “big concessions” to Russia in order to end the conflict. Among the possible concessions, the politician called “freezing the current line of contact” in the ceasefire agreement “in the style of the Korean War” and NATO’s obligation to prevent Ukraine from joining the alliance. In return, Russia should withdraw from the joint military agreement with China, Ramaswamy added.
In early November 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at the G20 summit, listed 10 conditions for the “Ukrainian peace formula”, among which are the restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory, fixing the end of the conflict, as well as ensuring food and energy and nuclear safety. In response, the Russian authorities said that Zelensky’s “peace formula” had nothing to do with peace, and noted that Kyiv was not ready for dialogue.
