The military committee of NATO will meet in Tallinn from 16 to 18 September. For the first time Sweden and Finland will take part in it. The conference will be chaired by Lieutenant General Martin Herem, Commander of the Estonian Defense Forces.
The heads of headquarters of the countries of the alliance will discuss military-strategic developments. They will concern the implementation of the decisions that were taken at the NATO summit in Madrid “regarding the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capabilities.”
The commanders-in-chief will also discuss ongoing operations, missions, and NATO activities, including the alliance’s mission in Iraq and Kosovo.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the transfer to NATO of a package of documents on Washington’s ratification of Finland’s and Sweden’s accession to the alliance. At the same time, Ankara stated that the memorandum signed with Finland and Sweden on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid might not be approved by the Turkish parliament. This will happen if these countries do not fulfill the obligations enshrined in the memorandum on countering terrorist organizations.
This document was signed on June 28. It removes barriers to Finland’s and Sweden’s accession to NATO. The condition is the establishment of cooperation between the northern countries and Turkey in the fight against terrorism, in particular with the PKK banned in Turkey, as well as the FETO organization, which Ankara accuses of being involved in the coup attempt in 2016.
