NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the intention of the alliance to monitor the activity of the private military company PMC Wagner in Belarus. He stated that this was a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the security of NATO member states. The announcement came after an informal dinner held in The Hague with the heads of state and government of several NATO member countries, including Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda.
Stoltenberg noted that it is too early to talk about the possible relocation of all Wagner units to Belarus, but NATO will carefully monitor the situation. He stressed that the alliance is ready to ensure the protection of each ally, especially the countries bordering Belarus.
Stoltenberg also confirmed that the decision to increase NATO’s presence on the eastern flank of the alliance in recent years was the right one, and the parties at this dinner confirmed this importance.
Recall that on the night of June 24, the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don was captured by the private military company PMC Wagner. The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, called the actions of the rebels a criminal adventure directed against Russia, and accused them of treason caused by their excessive ambitions and personal interests.
