The North Atlantic Alliance does not plan to deploy additional nuclear weapons in the European Union, reported Head of NATO’s Nuclear Policy Directorate Jessica Cox in an interview with the Finnish newspaper Ilta Sanomat.
“There’s a lot of talk about this in the media, but I think the nuclear weapons that the US has placed in Europe are in a good place where they are now. There is no reason to change their location,” Cox said.
She notes that there are no plans for changes in the deployment of nuclear weapons, and if a member country of the alliance wishes to participate in a nuclear mission, this should be formally discussed within NATO within the framework of the Nuclear Planning Group (NPG).
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that there were no plans to deploy an additional nuclear arsenal in Europe before the start of hostilities in Ukraine. Then the head of the bloc assured that the alliance would not deploy “any nuclear weapons outside those countries where such weapons, which are a component of our deterrence system, have been available for many years.”
In the summer communiqué adopted at the NATO summit in Vilnius, it was saidthat the circumstances under which NATO could use nuclear weapons are assessed as unlikely. At the same time, it was clarified that any use of nuclear weapons against NATO would fundamentally change the nature of the conflict.
As Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at SPIEFRussia does not need to use nuclear weapons, but this is theoretically permissible only if the territorial integrity and independence of the state is threatened.
