NATO has not made decisions on security guarantees for Ukraine

The NATO alliance has not made decisions on providing security guarantees for Ukraine and is still working on the details. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference following an informal meeting of the heads of foreign affairs agencies of the member countries of the organization in Oslo, transmits Reuters.

At the same time, Stoltenberg stressed that NATO is focused on Kyiv’s victory in the conflict and will continue to send military assistance. “The first and most important thing for NATO in the context of Ukraine is to ensure that it wins the war,” he said (cit. according to TASS). He also noted that the countries of the bloc do not consider themselves part of the conflict in Ukraine, despite the supply of more and more advanced types of weapons to Kyiv.

By information El Pais newspapers, NATO countries are in no hurry to provide Kiev with security guarantees in the form of forming a “containment” shell around Kiev by strengthening military assistance, since in this way the countries of the bloc can be directly involved in the conflict.

21 April Stoltenberg informed about reaching a consensus by NATO members that Ukraine should become a member of the alliance. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reacted to this statement on Twitter with the phrase “What?!” Earlier, the newspapers Financial Times and Le Monde, citing sources, wrote about the differences between NATO countries on this issue.

In the Kremlin declaredthat Stoltenberg’s words only confirm the correctness of the decision to conduct a special operation. Prior to this, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that the exclusion of the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO is still one of the goals of the special operation of the Russian Federation.

On September 30, 2022, in response to the admission of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions into Russia, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine file fast track application for NATO membership. At the same time, Stoltenberg supported Kyiv “in choosing its own path”, adding that all members of the bloc must approve the decision on this.
