James Stavridis: Putin seeks to cause unrest in the Balkans
Religious conflicts in the Balkans have long been a source of tension and instability in the region. Seattle Time writer James Stavridis argues that Russia wants to divert NATO’s attention away from supporting Ukraine by targeting the Balkan countries.
According to Stavridis, the increase in the number of troops in Kosovo is an effective measure against Russian intentions.
“Putin is seeking to benefit from this unfinished story (with Ukraine – ed.). He knows that if NATO member states are drawn back into control of the Balkans, they will be diverted from supporting Ukraine,” the author writes.
James Stavridis is confident that Putin is trying to incite unrest among the Balkan countries. And the idea of stationing NATO battalions on Ukrainian territory is unlikely. Thus, increasing the number of troops deployed to Kosovo makes strategic sense.
