Nabiullina did not see the prerequisites for lifting currency restrictions – Kommersant

The Bank of Russia has not yet made a decision on foreign exchange restrictions, which are valid until September 9, said Central Bank Chairman Elvira Nabiullina. However, according to her, there are no prerequisites for their removal.

“The restrictions are valid until September 9, we have not yet made a decision, but at the moment we can say that there are no prerequisites for lifting these restrictions,” Ms. Nabiullina answered the question of whether the Bank of Russia would extend restrictions on cash withdrawals (quote from the agency “Prime”).

The restrictions are related to the fact that there are sanctions against the import of cash foreign currency by Russian banks on the territory of the Russian Federation, the head of the Central Bank noted.

March 2022 European Union And USA banned the import of euro banknotes and dollar banknotes into Russia. Against this background, the Bank of Russia introduced strict regulation of the foreign exchange market, including a limit on the withdrawal of euros and dollars on March 9, 2022.

In March 2023, restrictions on foreign currency cash withdrawals have been extended for another six months, until September 9, 2023. Banks can sell to citizens US dollars and euros that have entered their cash desks since April 9, 2022, there are no restrictions on the sale of other foreign currencies.
