American billionaire Elon Musk admits the possibility of blocking his social network X (ex-Twitter) in the European Union, the publication reports Business Insider with reference to sources. According to the publication, he discussed the possibility of blocking the social network due to the new EU law on digital services (Digital Service Act, DSA).
The publication’s interlocutors claim that Mr. Musk has repeatedly appealed to the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, with a request to clarify what measures must be taken by X in order to comply with all DSA standards. However, there is still no clarity on this issue at the moment, and therefore the entrepreneur is ready “for the most radical decisions,” Business Insider sources note.
In particular, according to sources, Elon Musk admits the possibility of blocking the social network in the EU, and is also considering the option of limiting access to X for residents of the European Union. “He lost his patience,” explained one of the publication’s interlocutors.
The EU Digital Services Act came into force in August 2023. The document significantly strengthens the EU’s control over 19 large platforms, including X, TikTok, Instagram (banned in the Russian Federation; owned by the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation), YouTube, Google, Amazon Store. According to European Commissioner Thierry Breton, the priorities under the new law are the protection of children and the fight against disinformation, including “pro-Russian propaganda.”
