The events of 2014 in Ukraine were a coup, although the presidential election could be questionable, Tesla founder and Twitter owner Elon Musk said.
So the businessman commented on the publication on Twitter with an excerpt from an article by American political scientist John Mearsheimer, which states that Europe and the United States, among other things, are responsible for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The political scientist notes that for Russian President Vladimir Putin, “the illegal overthrow of the democratically elected and pro-Russian president of Ukraine, which he rightly called a “coup,” was the last straw.”
“These elections may have been dubious, but there is no doubt that the coup really happened,” Musk wrote in response.
In November 2013, former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych postponed the signing of an association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, as a result of which months-long protests began in the country, which led to a change of power in February 2014. Amid the events taking place in Ukraine, Yanukovych hastily left it. Subsequently, he called what happened in the country an unconstitutional coup, and he called himself a legitimate president.
Russia’s special operation in Ukraine would not have been carried out now if there hadn’t been a coup d’état in this country in 2014, declared Putin at a meeting with the mothers of servicemen – participants in the special operation.
