Dozens of guns and tons of shells are needed to organize a fire shaft.
A breakthrough of well-fortified enemy positions is possible only with powerful artillery support. So says a prominent military expert, editor-in-chief of the Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine Viktor Murakhovsky.
The analyst cited a quote from the military memoirs of Marshal Sergei Moskalenko about the importance of artillery support: “With two hundred guns per kilometer of the front, they don’t ask about the enemy, but only inform how far our advancing units have reached.”
“The fire shaft is used when breaking through the enemy’s defense prepared in advance and developed in engineering terms,” Murakhovsky wrote in the Telegram channel. A barrage of fire is a solid screen of fire created on one or simultaneously on two lines in front of the front of its attacking troops. The barrage of fire must accompany the attacking troops as they move into the depth of the enemy’s defenses.
To organize a fire shaft, it is necessary to have artillery and ammunition in the right amount. Fire should cover enemy positions first on the front line, and then after 300-600 meters, taking into account the fact that our troops are advancing at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour.
As the expert noted, the rate of consumption of shells when conducting a fire shaft is 8 shells per minute per 100 m of front for 122 mm caliber guns, and 6 shells per minute per 100 m of front for 152 mm caliber guns and 120 mm mortars.
It is easy to calculate, the expert notes, that for every kilometer of the front with a single fire shaft, 40 guns are required, and with a double one – 60 guns. As a rule, a breakthrough of the enemy’s defenses is planned in a sector of four kilometers along the front, at least.
“This will require the concentration of artillery in the amount of 160-240 guns. With a flow rate of 6400/9600 shells per minute, ”concludes Viktor Murakhovsky.
Such ammunition consumption rates give an understanding of the tasks of the rear services responsible for the delivery of shells to the front line.
