All civilian sailors who have been in Ukraine since the start of the special operation have returned to Russia. This was announced by the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatyana Moskalkova at the international conference of ombudsmen “The Future of Human Rights in the 21st Century” in Ankara.
“During the conflict, we were able to return all civilian Russian sailors to Russian soil,” she said (quote according to TASS).
Moskalkova noted that it was possible to return the sailors to Russia thanks to the efforts of the Ombudsmen of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. According to her, the Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets found out the real information about the situation of Russian citizens and handed over the information to the Russian side.
The exchange between Russia and Ukraine under the control of the ombudsmen of the two countries took place on October 17, 2022. 110 people were returned home from Ukrainian captivity, including 72 sailors from civilian ships. The Ukrainian side kept the sailors in the port of Izmail for eight months, in fact, from the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine, explained then Moskalkova.
The day before, January 11, in Ankara took place meeting of the Ombudsmen of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. The parties discussed issues of providing humanitarian assistance to citizens of the two countries. Then Moskalkova said that the ombudsmen participated in the process of returning 40 Russians and 40 Ukrainians from captivity. Earlier, the parties exchanged lists with the names of prisoners who were asked to return to their homeland.
