Moscow City Hall terminated lease agreements with the Sakharov Center

The Department of City Property of Moscow notified the Sakharov Center (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) of the termination of lease agreements for three premises of the organization in the capital. This was reported by the press service of the Sakharov Center.
“On January 24, 2023, the Sakharov Center received a letter from the Moscow Department of City Property, which notifies us of the termination of lease agreements for all our premises: the Center building, the Exhibition Hall and an apartment in a house on Zemlyanoy Val Street,” the statement published on the center’s website says.
They explained that the decision to terminate the contracts was connected with the amendments to the law on foreign agents that came into force in December 2022. According to the changes, foreign agents cannot receive state support. The press service specified that the Sakharov Center rented the premises free of charge.
The buildings were transferred to the Sakharov Center in 1993 and 1996. In particular, an archive of his documents and letters is stored in the apartment of Academician Andrei Sakharov on Zemlyanoy Val, and there is also a museum exposition dedicated to the life of the scientist, the statement said.
The organization does not specify the timing of the release of the premises, but notes that the center will still have time to hold events dedicated to the centenary of Sakharov’s second wife, Elena Bonner. Bonner was born on February 15, 1923. On her initiative, the Sakharov Center was established in 1990.
