Moscow City Duma deputy from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Evgeny Stupin (recognized as a foreign agent) said that he left Russia and went on a “long-term business trip.” According to the parliamentarian, he has no intention of returning to his homeland in the near future.
The politician told the Telegram channel SOTAthat in the future he hopes to come to Russia again, but does not know when this will become possible. Mr. Stupin did not specify where he is now.
The Moscow City Duma deputy also added that the reason for his departure from Russia was the threat of criminal prosecution. Evgeny Stupin claims that he “received a number of threats with a criminal case: both publicly through anonymous Telegram channels and privately.”
Mr. Stupin was elected as a deputy of the Moscow City Duma in 2019 in one of the single-member constituencies; he ran as a candidate from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and subsequently joined the communist faction in the capital’s parliament. However, in the spring of 2023, Evgenia Stupina excluded from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation due to criticism of the Russian military operation in Ukraine and cooperation with the non-systemic opposition.
In June of this year, the Russian Ministry of Justice included Yevgeny Stupin in the register of foreign agents. The reason for this was that the Moscow parliamentarian “disseminated false information about the decisions made by public authorities and the policies they pursued,” and also “repeatedly publicly spoke out against the special operation in Ukraine.”
