Mortality continues to decline in 2023

In January 2023, the death rate exceeded the birth rate by 1.6 times (168,400 died, 104,200 people were born), follows from Rosstat data. This is better than the same indicator last year: then almost twice as many people died as were born (193,000 people against 103,800 children). Mortality month by month, therefore, decreased by 13%, the birth rate increased by 0.4% year on year. In December last year, the death rate exceeded the birth rate by 1.5 times (164,540 versus 108,325).

For the whole of last year, the death rate fell by 22.1%, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said at a meeting with the president on March 29. In her opinion, there are signs of positive demographic trends, which she hopes will continue this year. It is expected that by the end of 2023 the mortality rate in Russia will decrease by 1.5-2% compared to the pre-pandemic 2019, and life expectancy will be 73.5 years, Golikova noted. According to the results of the first two months of 2023, there is also a trend towards a further decrease in mortality, she said (Rosstat should publish data for February in April. – Vedomosti).
