More than 97,000 refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh arrived in Armenia

Over 97,000 internally displaced persons arrived from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia by 18:00 (17:00 Moscow time). Refugees brought over 20,000 units of transport to the territory of the republic, press secretary of the Armenian Cabinet of Ministers Nazeli Baghdasaryan said at a briefing.

“[Всего] 97,735 forcibly displaced compatriots entered Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh. 20,609 vehicles were also transported, 74,382 people were registered,” Baghdasaryan specified (quote according to TASS).

On the evening of September 28, the total number of refugees in Armenia was 78,354, while in the morning the number was about 65,000.

Armenians began leaving Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan began “anti-terrorist measures” on September 19. The next day, the authorities of the unrecognized republic announced the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement. After this, negotiations took place in Yevlakh between representatives of the Azerbaijani government and the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. Following the meeting, Karabakh military personnel began to hand over their weapons.

The disarmament process is taking place under the control of Russian peacekeepers. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, as of September 28, 14 units of armored vehicles, 13 units of automobile equipment, seven units of air defense equipment, 45 units of field artillery guns, MLRS and mortars, more than 4,500 units of small arms, anti-tank weapons and MANPADS and about 1.5 million ammunition.

On September 28, the President of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Samvel Shahramanyan signed a decree on the termination of the existence of the republic from January 1, 2024. At the same moment, all its state institutions and organizations will cease to operate.
