More than 2,000 convicted of discrediting the army pardoned in Myanmar

Myanmar’s military authorities have pardoned more than 2,000 people convicted of “encouraging dissent against the army.” This was reported by the agency AFP.
The amnesty was announced in honor of the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha – the Wesak holiday.
According to the law on “dissent”, the sentence is up to three years in prison. It is noted that those arrested were detained after the military coup in 2021.
In February 2021, the Myanmar military took over and removed the civilian government by declaring a state of emergency (State of Emergency). Following the meeting of the National Defense and Security Council, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Senior General Min Aung Hlein became the leader of the country.
At the same time, President Win Myint, leader of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, and others were arrested.
Long before the coup, the military accused the ruling party of violations in the last parliamentary elections, where this party received 82% of the seats in parliament, and the Cohesion and Development Party of the Union, close to the army, only 6%, which is explained by the majoritarian voting system adopted in the country in one round.
The military coup took place on the day when the first meeting of the new parliament was to take place. General Min Aung Hlein said that the military would introduce a state of emergency for one year, after which they would hold democratic elections with the transfer of power to the winning party, but did not name their date.
