Moldova’s decision to reduce the staff of the Russian embassy in the republic is a response to Moscow’s policy. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova Nicolae Popescu.
“Before this decision, Russia pursued a disrespectful policy towards the citizens of the country. To a large extent, this decision is a response to such a policy of Russia,” leads Popescu’s words portal Deschide.
There is a long “history of hostile politics” that has intensified in recent times, he said. Popescu added that the republic had established that some of the employees of the Russian diplomatic mission were allegedly engaged in “destabilizing the situation” in the country. The Minister hopes that the remaining diplomats will work to maintain a diplomatic dialogue.
July 26 Chisinau accepted decision to reduce the number of staff of the Russian embassy in the republic and announced the expulsion of 45 people. Popescu then explained this decision by the presence of suspicions that some of the embassy employees “are involved in the destabilization of the situation in the country.”
Russian Ambassador to the Republic Oleg Vasnetsov then said that such measures undermine the possibility of dialogue between Moscow and Chisinau. He was summoned to the Moldavian Foreign Ministry amid media reports about antennas on the roof of the embassy, which were allegedly used for espionage. In the Kremlin declaredthat Chisinau deliberately brings relations with Russia “in a very miserable state” and the country’s leadership “cuts all the ropes.”
