Moldova withdrew from the agreement on a joint commission on disarmament in the CIS

Moldova has denounced an agreement on the establishment of a joint consultative commission on disarmament issues in the CIS. This decision was taken by the government at a meeting transmits TASS.

The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic considered the agreement non-functional, because, according to the Minister of Defense of Moldova, Anatoly Nosatii, the country did not implement the provisions of the agreement. In 1994, Chisinau decided to exclude interaction in the military-political field within the framework of the CIS, pointing out the contradictions in the document to the principles of sovereignty and independence of Moldova.

The agreement was concluded in 1992. According to the document, the commission contributes to the fulfillment of obligations on international disarmament issues, and also exchanges views and information in this area.

In February, Moldova recalled its permanent representative from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. At the same time, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, said that Chisinau began the process of withdrawing from agreements within the CIS. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, the republic is a party to approximately 330 documents.

In May Chisinau declared on withdrawal from the CIS Assembly. Then the speaker of the parliament of the republic, Igor Grosu, explained that his country does not have common borders with the CIS, membership in the association did not allow Moldova to improve its economic situation or resolve the situation around the unrecognized Transnistria. At the end of June, the Moldovan authorities launched exit procedure.
