The construction of additional units of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) is possible in the future, but now it is important to complete the construction of the second unit on time, as provided for by the current contract. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko at a meeting with the head of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev, transmits BelTA.
“This (construction of additional blocks) is a more distant prospect. Nevertheless, at this stage it is very important to successfully complete the project, which is stipulated by the current contract,” he said.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2400 MW, located near the town of Ostrovets, Grodno region, is being built according to the Russian AES-2006 project. The first power unit was commissioned in June 2021.
In addition, after the construction of the second block is completed, a special storage facility for spent fuel will be built, the Belarusian prime minister recalled. At the same time, even if the construction of new units does not begin yet, Russia and Belarus have a large field for interaction in the field of nuclear energy, he noted. Now Moscow and Minsk are completing the development of an intergovernmental agreement on the transportation of nuclear materials as part of a roadmap for the Union’s program in the field of nuclear energy, Golovchenko added.
Likhachev, in turn, stressed that the construction of the BelNPP remains a priority project of Rosatom.
“This is the first VVER-1200 unit that we have built abroad. And of course, we don’t want to stop there,” he said.
The Ministry of Energy of Belarus previously noted that with the commissioning of two BelNPP power units into commercial operation, electricity generation will amount to about 18 billion kWh per year. BelNPP will provide about 40% of domestic electricity needs and will annually replace about 4.5 billion cubic meters. m of natural gas.
