A group of military men are arrested in Sierra Leone, they are suspected of preparing a coup d’état. This was reported by local police in West Africa, transmits The Sierra Leone Telegraph.
The exact number of detainees was not specified, but a police statement said that among them were high-ranking military officers. According to law enforcement officers, the detainees planned to carry out a coup under the guise of mass protests, which were supposed to take place from 7 to 10 August. During these events, the military intended to attack state institutions and citizens.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that these individuals planned to use the alleged peaceful protests between August 7 and 10, 2023 as a cover to unleash violent attacks on the state, institutions and civilians,” the police said in a statement.
At the end of June, presidential elections were held in Sierra Leone, which was won by the then current head of state, Julius Maad Bio, with more than 56% of the vote with an 80% turnout. He was re-elected for a second term.
Opponents called the election results fraudulent because the voting results, broken down by constituency, were not published. Dissatisfaction with the government is caused by problems in the country’s economy, reports The Sierra Leone Telegraph. According to the publication, inflation in Sierra Leone is 49%, while youth unemployment is increasing every year.
