The net migration outflow from new regions of Russia (DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions) in January – November 2023 amounted to 87.6 thousand people, reports RBC with reference to Rosstat data. This is the first time the service has published such statistics.

According to Rosstat, residents of new regions most often move to the Moscow region or Krasnodar region. So, over the 11 months of last year, 13.9 and 14 thousand people moved there, respectively. The highest share of the total number of arrivals was made up of migrants from new Russian regions in Crimea (14%, or 5.9 thousand people) and in the Rostov region (12%, or 12.3 thousand people).

In February 2024, the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation reported that in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions there are a total of 4.56 million voters. The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, in turn, predictedthat the population in the new territories as of January 1 of this year should have been about 3.23 million people.

In addition, from Rosstat data it follows that in January-November 2023, the total migration increase in Russia exceeded 195 thousand people, of which 107.5 thousand were due to migration of people abroad.

The DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions became part of Russia on September 30, 2022, following the results of referendums held in the regions. The West and Ukraine did not recognize the territorial changes and condemned them, calling them annexation.
