MFA: The Russian Federation has curtailed work on the draft UN Security Council statement on Nord Streams

Russia has curtailed work on a draft statement by the Chairman of the UN Security Council on the investigation of the Nord Stream explosions, reported Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Moscow announced the start of work on this statement on the anniversary of the September 26 attack. It, as the department clarified, would contain a signal from the Security Council about “the need to conduct an impartial international investigation in order to prevent this from happening in the future.”

A month of negotiations showed that representatives of Western countries are not ready for serious work and are trying to let everything go “on the brakes,” as evidenced by their proposal to remove from the text the phrase about holding accountable the perpetrators and those who ordered the bombings. In their opinion, the Security Council should not interfere in the conduct of national investigations in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. At the same time, these countries have not provided at least preliminary results of their work, the Foreign Ministry emphasized. New versions of what happened in the media only strengthen the Russian Federation’s doubts about the desire of these countries to identify the organizers and perpetrators of sabotage.

“Under such conditions, the Russian side was forced to curtail work on the draft statement of the UN Security Council Chairman on the investigation of the terrorist attack on the Nord Stream gas pipelines,” the statement says.

Russia, as noted, will continue to draw the attention of the international community to this crime.

On September 26, 2022, the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, which pass through the Baltic Sea, were damaged as a result of sabotage. Only one of the Nord Stream 2 lines has survived, but it is not used for gas supplies, since Germany did not allow the pipeline to be put into operation after its completion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the Anglo-Saxons of involvement in the attack. Already in October 2022, Sweden announced the completion of the investigation, declaring “increasing suspicions of gross sabotage,” but those responsible for the incident were never named. The Kremlin has repeatedly called for an independent investigation and for Russia to be allowed into it.

American journalist Seymour Hersh claimed involvement in the bombing of US gas pipelines. At the same time, a number of Western media claimed that evidence points to the involvement of criminals associated with Ukraine in the sabotage. The New York Times first reported about a certain “pro-Ukrainian group” in March 2023. At the same time, Die Zeit stated that a Ukrainian ship on which traces of explosives were found could have been involved in the sabotage. The Kremlin doubted these data and called the reports a “coordinated fake.”
