Meta Corporation (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) agreed pay $725 million to settle a class-action lawsuit against her over the illegal transfer of users’ personal data to third parties. The parties came to an agreement on Thursday, December 22. This is primarily about the transfer of data to Cambridge Analytica. This is reportedly the largest amount ever paid in a data privacy class action lawsuit.
Facebook users (blocked in Russia after Meta was declared extremist) filed lawsuit against the company in 2018. Then it turned out that the British Cambridge Analytica, associated with the campaign headquarters of former US President Donald Trump, had access to the data of 87 million users of the platform. In 2019, US authorities imposed a record $5 billion fine on Facebook in this case.
While agreeing to pay compensation, Meta denied wrongdoing, stating that it agreed to the settlement “in the best interests of our community and shareholders.” In addition, the corporation said that in the past few years it has revised its privacy policy and implemented a new privacy protection program.
