Former German Chancellor Merkel urged not to narrow one’s horizons, excluding talks on Ukraine

Angela Merkel, speaking at the book fair in Leipzig, urged not to narrow the horizons on the issue of peace negotiations on Ukraine, ZDF reports.

It is noted that the former German chancellor called for an open discussion in order to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. Talking to journalists, the politician pointed out the importance of being able to think more broadly. “It is important to me, or I have always tried, that we do not narrow our horizons too much,” Merkel said, talking about the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

She also said that when someone says that it is worth considering the possibility of holding peace talks, then one should not “boo him right away.” And she cited the position of the former head of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, as an example.

Earlier, Merkel said that she did everything possible to prevent a military conflict between Russia and Ukraine when she was in power in Germany. She emphasized that she was “very worried” about Ukraine, and said that it was time to think about a future scenario in which Moscow and Kyiv might sit down at the negotiating table.

At the same time, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, reacted sharply to these words of Merkel, saying: “If you cannot correct the mistakes of the past, just stop making excuses.”
