Melitopol officially became the capital of the Zaporozhye region

Acting Governor of the Zaporozhye region Yevhen Balitsky today, March 3, signed two decrees concerning the territorial division of the region. The first decree creates municipalities in the region and establishes their boundaries. The second one is the formation of administrative-territorial units of the Zaporozhye region.

“Establish that the city of Melitopol is the administrative and political center of the Zaporozhye region,” the second document says.

Mr. Balitsky decided to create urban districts (cities of regional significance):

• Melitopol;
• Berdyansk;
• Energodar.

Create municipal districts (districts of the Zaporozhye region):

1. Akimovsky;
2. Berdyansky;
3. Vasilevsky;
4. Veselovsky;
5. Kamensko-Dneprovsky;
6. Kuibyshevsky;
7. Melitopol;
8. Mikhailovsky;
9. Pologovsky;
10. Priazovsky;
11. Seaside;
12. Tokmak;
13. Chernigov.

Decrees come into force after official publication.

Before the summer reform of 2020, there were 20 districts in the Zaporozhye region, then part of Ukraine. After the reform, there were five of them.

If we compare the territorial division established today with the one that existed before the reform, then there are no names of the following districts in the Russian Zaporozhye:

1. Bilmaksky district (until 2016 Kuibyshevsky);
2. Velikobelozersky district;
3. Volnyansky district;
4. Gulyaipolsky district;
5. Zaporozhye region;
6. Novonikolaevsky district;
7. Orekhovsky district;
8. Rozovsky district.

Compared to the five districts announced after the reform, there is no name in Russian Zaporozhye Zaporozhye region.

The administrative center of the Zaporozhye region under the control of Kyiv was the city of Zaporozhye, in September 2022 Melitopol supposed make the temporary capital of the region, according to the same month, Zaporozhye was under the control of Kyiv.

Zaporozhye region, along with Kherson, as well as Luhansk and Donetsk people’s republics entered into the Russian Federation following a referendum.
