Meetings were held in Moscow in 2022–2023 at which the possibility of “undermining the dollar as a world reserve currency” was discussed. The newspaper reports this The Washington Post with reference to documents of the Russian Security Council and sources.

It is noted that Russia is strengthening ties with China and the Global South in order to “challenge the international financial system.” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied Russia’s plans to undermine US dominance in the global financial system, but noted that Moscow is working on an alternative.

Mr. Peskov said that the Kremlin is “carefully monitoring (the situation.— “Ъ”) and builds a new system of economic neurons, because the previous system turned out to be unreliable, false and dangerous.”

After the start of the SVO in Ukraine, the European Union disconnected Russian banks from the SWIFT system. The head of the regulator, Elvira Nabiullina, said that disconnection from SWIFT is one of the most painful sanctions.
