Medvedev supports army increase to 1.5 million people

Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev believes that Russia needs a mixed, contract-draft army. He supports the proposal of the Ministry of Defense to expand it to 1.5 million people.
He commented on this topic in an interview with Russian media and VKontakte users. The deputy chairman of the Security Council said that “the successful defense of our homeland corresponds to a mixed army based on conscription and on a contract.” The army was also affected, he said, by Russia’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine.
“Second: of course, the SVO has influenced, and in the most significant way, since the strength of the army is tested during the period of hostilities. Third, our army must become larger. And the parameters of its number have been announced – it is at least 1.5 million people,” Mr. Medvedev said.
Since 2023, President Vladimir Putin has increased the size of the Russian armed forces by 137 thousand people, to 2.04 million (1.15 million military personnel). In December 2022, speaking at the collegium of the Ministry of Defense, the head of the department, Sergei Shoigu, proposed increasing the number of military personnel in the Russian army to 1.5 million people, including contract military personnel to 695 thousand. Vladimir Putin supported this. The Minister also proposed to increase the draft age from 18-27 to 21-30 years, the relevant bill has already been submitted to the State Duma.
