Medvedev spoke about the role of a special operation in preventing a world war

Russia is conducting a special operation in Ukraine to prevent a third world war from starting, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with LCI.

He emphasized that the apocalypse had not yet come, but “at least the first angel sounded.” According to Medvedev, the situation has been contained so far. “We must do everything so that the third world war does not happen, and the policy of our country is aimed precisely at this. Let’s face it, even a special military operation is being carried out so that a third world war does not happen, ”he added (quote according to RIA Novosti).

Medvedev also said that another reason for the special operation was a threat to Russia’s vital interests. “Russia’s vital interests are already under threat. And that is why a special military operation is being carried out to protect Donbass, to demilitarize the armed forces of Ukraine and carry out denazification measures. If there were no threat to the interests of our country, then such an operation would not be carried out now,” he said.

According to Medvedev, Russia was negotiating with all parties – with Ukraine, Europe and the United States, but they did not come to fruition, since the Western countries refused to give the Russian side guarantees that Ukraine would not join NATO.

December 15, 2021 Russia handed over US its requirements for security guarantees. Among other things, Washington must provide legal guarantees that NATO will not expand eastward and will not accept Ukraine and Georgia into its membership. Moscow also offered to abandon the deployment of nuclear weapons outside of Russia and the United States. The Kremlin, which unilaterally enforces a moratorium on the deployment of intermediate and shorter-range missiles in Europe, wants to ban their deployment in places from which Russia and the United States can strike at each other’s territories.

In particular, it follows from the documents that NATO does not want to abandon the “open door” policy and allows Ukraine and Georgia to join it in the future. At the same time, Washington and the North Atlantic Alliance offered to negotiate disarmament agreements and build mutual trust.
