Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev suggested that Ukraine abandon Kyiv as a disputed territory in order to join NATO. So, he commented the idea of the head of the office of the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Stian Jensen.
“Ukraine can join NATO if it gives up the disputed territories. And what? The idea is curious. The only question is that all allegedly their territories are highly controversial. And in order to enter the bloc, the Kyiv authorities will have to give up even Kyiv itself, the capital of Ancient Rus’,” he wrote.
Instead of Kyiv, the capital could be moved to Lvov, Medvedev suggested.
August 15 Jenssen admittedthat one of the options for ending the conflict in Ukraine and Kyiv joining NATO could be the abandonment of the disputed territories in favor of Russia. “I think the solution might be for Ukraine to give up territory and get NATO membership in return,” he said.
During the July summit in Vilnius, NATO member countries agreed on the conditions for Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Kyiv will be sent an invitation to join after all the conditions are met and the unanimous consent of all members of the bloc is reached. As noted, the “formal” conditions for joining the alliance will be softened for Kyiv, which will allow it to shorten the process of joining.
There were no clear dates for Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Prior to this, Stoltenberg stated that Ukraine cannot be accepted into the alliance until the end of the conflict.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier that NATO countries are actually fighting on the side of Ukraine, there is nowhere to get deeper into the conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin back in September 2022 said that the Russian army in Ukraine was opposed to “virtually the entire military machine of the collective West.”
