Medvedev allowed the outbreak of war in the event of execution of the ICC warrant for the arrest of the leader of the country

The issuance of a warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin only escalated the situation and created a pretext for starting a war. This statement was made by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev during his speech at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum (SPBILF).
“What is a warrant for the arrest of a foreign leader? <...> This is a casus belli (Latin for “cause for war” – Vedomosti), which could be followed by the outbreak of war if something like this happens,” he said, commenting on the issuance of an ICC warrant for Putin’s arrest.
Medvedev also called the court “a political tool of warmongers.”
On March 17, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin and children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova. In the Kremlin called court decisions void and stressed that they have no legal force for Russia. Medvedev earlier predicted “monstrous consequences” for international law due to the issuance of a warrant.
March 20 RF IC aroused criminal case against ICC Prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan and Judges Tomoko Akane, Rosario Salvatore Aytala and Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez. The investigation found that the decision to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin is obviously illegal, since prosecutors and the court have no reason to bring him to criminal responsibility.
Previously to hold judges accountable urged Speaker of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin. He also offered legally ban the work of the ICC in Russia and impose penalties for its support. Andrey Klishas, Head of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building considered such a proposal is redundant, since the ICC is a “fictitious institution” and its decisions are null and void.
