“We don’t need a repeat of history in 2008. We remain ready to tackle problems at the negotiating table in the spirit of the UN Charter. But if our concern has real outlines, we will not hesitate. In Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the idea of joining Russia is still popular. And it may well be implemented if there are good reasons for that, ”he said.
If this happens, then South Ossetia and Abkhazia will become part of Russia, “for the West, this turn of events will be another shameful fiasco and another symbol of a catastrophic loss of influence,” Medvedev added.
According to Medvedev, the war in 2008 would not have happened if the current president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, had not chosen the military way of resolving the problem with South Ossetia. Medvedev stressed that “just like 15 years ago, it is clear that neither the daily shelling of peaceful cities and bridges, nor other provocations, including political assassinations and terrorist attacks, have any effect.”
On the night of August 8, 2008, an armed conflict took place on the territory of South Ossetia. Georgia attacked the capital city of Tskhinvali in order to take control of the self-proclaimed republic (Abkhazia and South Ossetia declared their independence in the 1990s).
Dmitry Medvedev, who at that time served as president of Russia, announced the start of a peacekeeping mission in South Ossetia and the transfer of Russian forces to the conflict zone. On August 12, he announced the completion of the operation to force the Georgian authorities to peace, and on August 26, Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Also, the independence of states is recognized by Venezuela, Syria, Nicaragua and Nauru. At the same time, Georgia still considers them its territories.
