In his opinion, “the roots of the conflict in Ukraine appeared even before Biden’s inauguration,” but neither the US President himself nor Secretary of State Anthony Blinken “foresaw that the war would begin so soon” and did everything in their power to prevent it. .
As Walt stressed, now the world will never know whether the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine could have been avoided if the United States and its allies in Europe tried to respond “more seriously and creatively” to Moscow’s concerns about Russia’s security due to the fact that Ukraine join NATO, and “stopped stubbornly insisting” on it.
The author of the article believes that Washington’s diplomacy turned out to be ineffective, and the State Department needs a reboot.
