Media: the G20 summit declaration has been fully agreed upon, with the exception of the issue of Ukraine

In the declaration of the G20 summit, which begins tomorrow in New Delhi, everything was agreed upon except the issue of the conflict on the territory of Ukraine, Sky TV channel reports.

As noted in the story, Indian authorities are optimistic about the possibility of developing a final declaration following the summit, but acknowledged that the remaining problem lies in developing language regarding the situation in Ukraine.

Negotiators reportedly argued over the issue for several days, seeking to reach a consensus that could bring Russia and China into the fold on critical global issues such as climate change, for example.

Amitabh Kant, India’s negotiator for the G20, said the summit’s final statement, the Leaders’ Declaration, would represent the position of the global South and developing countries.

“The declaration of the leaders of New Delhi is almost ready, I would not like to dwell on it. This declaration will be recommended to the leaders,” Kant said at a press conference.

Four Indian government sources said the language on the Ukraine conflict was the only remaining issue and a second meeting of sherpas (confidants) to seek consensus was likely to last late into the night.

Earlier, the leaders of the Russian Federation and China, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, refused to travel to the G-20 summit in India.
