Negotiations between the rebels of Niger and the West African delegation (ECOWAS, unites 15 states) almost did not bring results, the next steps to resolve the situation in the country are not clear. This is an unnamed official informed in conversation with the Associated Press (AP).

An ECOWAS delegation arrived on August 19 in Niger’s capital, Niamey, to make another attempt at diplomatic mediation with the military that had come to power.

According to an AP interlocutor, the talks lasted about two hours, the discussion “gave little.” The delegation met with the commander of the Presidential Guard of Niger, General Abdurakhaman Tchiani.

As Reuters reported, the bloc on Friday, August 18, announced the agreement of an unnamed “D-day” for a possible military intervention in Niger if diplomatic efforts fail. They stressed that they would not conduct “an endless dialogue with the recalcitrant junta.”

On July 26, the Niger military announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazum. The new leader of the country was Tchiani, who led the rebellion. On July 31, ECOWAS issued a statement on the possible use of force if the rebels do not restore constitutional order in the country within a week and release the ousted president. On August 8, after the completion of the organization’s ultimatum, the French media reported that African countries could send a contingent of 25,000 troops to invade Niger.
