Media: Gangs attacked Haiti’s main prison and freed hundreds of prisoners

Armed gangs attacked Haiti’s main prison in Port-au-Prince and freed prisoners. Several hundred criminals were released. The news portal Gazette Haiti reported this.

According to journalists, the time for the attack was chosen specifically. The Prime Minister of the Republic, Ariel Henri, is currently absent from the country. He flew to Kenya, where he agreed to sign an agreement to send a local peacekeeping contingent to Haiti specifically to fight armed groups.

According to the portal, the guards were released after all the prisoners were released. There are no casualties reported as a result of the attack on the prison.

The crime and humanitarian situation in Haiti has deteriorated sharply following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 and the devastating earthquake that occurred in August of the same year.

At the moment, according to Telesur TV channel, armed groups control 80 percent of the territory.
