Media: five countries will become new members of the BRICS

BRICS will announce the admission of five more countries to the association, the sixth member may join the organization in the coming years. About it informs UOL portal with a link to the draft outcome document of the summit.
According to the publication, the approved list includes Iran, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt. UOL notes that the countries have been selected based on their geographic location. In addition, preference was given to the states that are members of the “Big Twenty” (G20).
For the “geographical balance”, another African country may enter the BRICS, the portal clarifies.
The day before, on August 23, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said that the participants in the BRICS summit agreed on the issue of expansion. At the same time, she did not specify which principles were agreed upon by the leaders of the countries. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, told Vedomosti that the criteria for joining the BRICS will soon be announced by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The 15th BRICS Summit is being held in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 22 to 24 August. It is attended by the leaders of China, India, Brazil and South Africa. Russian President Vladimir Putin takes part in the summit via video link. Directly on the site, Moscow is represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
