The Finnish authorities intend to ban cars with Russian license plates from entering the country. Yle reports this.
According to the broadcaster, the decision will be announced by Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on September 15. Cars designed for less than 10 people will no longer be able to cross the border. Yle writes that there are some exceptions to the rule, but does not specify them. The effective date of the ban is also unknown.
The introduction of the restriction is based on an explanation from the EC, according to which the import of cars with Russian registration into the EU is prohibited. Yle writes that in this way the EU authorities are trying to stop the circumvention of anti-Russian sanctions. Previously, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia made a decision to ban entry to cars with Russian license plates. Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets said that “restrictions are most effective when sanctions are imposed jointly.”
Previously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland claimedthat the authorities do not yet plan to implement the EU recommendation. “If another decision is made, we will announce it in advance,” the department clarified.
