Media: coup attempt thwarted in Kyrgyzstan

Employees of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) of Kyrgyzstan detained “participants in a possible coup.” About it informs agency 24.kg, citing its own sources.

According to the interlocutors, a group of people was preparing to seize power by force. Information about the identity of the detainees is not specified. Law enforcement agencies have not yet commented on this information.

24.kg also published a video allegedly showing the moment of detention. In the footage, security officers run into the open gates of a private house. Other details of the detention were not reported.

In November 2021, the State Committee for National Security of the Republic informed on the suppression of attempts to forcibly seize state power. According to the intelligence service, a group of people planned to organize provocations to destabilize the socio-political situation immediately after the parliamentary elections in the country, scheduled for November 28. It was noted that the coup was being prepared under the leadership of a number of parliament deputies and high-ranking officials. Their names and surnames were not specified.

After the next parliamentary elections in 2020, protests began in Kyrgyzstan. Voting took place on October 4th. The next day, about 2,000 supporters of parties that did not make it into the parliament of the republic gathered on the central Ala-Too square in Bishkek.
