The Algerian authorities are considering the possibility of increasing natural gas supplies to France by 50%. About it reported radio station “Europe-1”.
According to the radio station, at this stage it is still about a verbal commitment on the part of Algeria. “In the next few hours, negotiations between the French energy company Engie and Algeria should be held to confirm the commitment to increase gas supplies, as well as to clarify these volumes,” Europe-1 notes. “Although France is not heavily dependent on Algerian gas, the possibility of increasing supplies by 50% in the current conditions would allow Paris to partially cope with the cessation of gas imports from Russia,” the publication emphasizes.
August 25 French President Emmanuel Macron visited Algeria. Following the visit, he declaredthat strengthening Franco-Algerian cooperation in the field of natural gas is unlikely to change the situation in France due to the low share of this resource in the country’s energy balance. Meanwhile, Mr. Macron noted the important role of Algeria in “diversifying Europe’s gas supply.”
Algeria is the largest African gas supplier to Europe. 11% of the gas consumed by European countries comes from there. In France, the country accounts for 8% of the market. The largest suppliers were Norway (36%) and Russia (17% before the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine).
