Jean-Luc Mélenchon supports Olivier Faure’s proposal to launch a referendum on superprofits

Concluding the debates of the “summer lecture halls” of rebellious France in Valence (Drôme), Jean-Luc Mélenchon called, on Sunday August 28, the left-wing parties allied with Nupes to work together, despite the disagreements which persist, and gave its support to the proposal formulated by the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure to launch a referendum of shared initiative (RIP) on the taxation of superprofits.
“We must force the President of the Republic to move towards this taxation of superprofits and I would like there to be a referendum of shared initiative”declared Friday the leader of the Socialist Party, specifying that he would propose to his partners of the Nupes to join the initiative.
“His proposal is in line with what we ourselves are trying to do with our petition. She is welcome”replied Jean-Luc Mélenchon from the stage, in reference to the petition demanding the taxation of superprofits put online before the weekend.
“If the parliamentary group [de la France insoumise] – because it is he who must decide – accept the idea that we table a referendum motion, well all the “rebellious” and “rebellious” people of France everywhere will get to work to bring together the 4.7 million signatures we will need”promised the former presidential candidate, thanking Olivier Faure for this proposal “which guarantees that the Nupes lives, that the Nupes will live”.
A complex procedure that never ended
“It is time to tax the profiteers of the crisis, to increase the contribution of very large companies. When the United States increases its taxes on companies by six points, let’s not say that it has become a Chavista state! »still defended Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
Since 2008, article 11 of the Constitution authorizes the organization of a referendum of shared initiative, on the initiative of at least one fifth of the parliamentarians and which must be supported by at least one tenth of the electorate, i.e. nearly 4.7 million people.
The complex procedure had already been initiated in 2020 at the initiative of the left to oppose the privatization of Paris airports. It had not succeeded, for lack of sufficient signatures. However, the project had been postponed by the government indefinitely.
Elisabeth Borne does not close the door
During discussions on purchasing power in Parliament this summer, the presidential majority as well as the Republicans had rejected the amendments proposed by Nupes in corporate taxation. The idea of a specific tax on the profits made by certain groups as a result of the crisis has not, however, been completely ruled out.
At the beginning of August, the MoDem deputies had already pleaded for a ” reflection “ in the fall on the taxation of “superprofits” companies such as TotalEnergies, referring in particular to a “flash mission” launched by the Finance Committee. On Saturday, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said in an interview with Parisianthat it did not close the door to the principle of such a tax, while deeming more effective a voluntary reduction in prices by companies in order to protect the purchasing power of consumers.
