In the second season of the Kontakt TV series, which airs on the Premier platform owned by the Gazprom-Media holding, the face of actor Maxim Vitorgan was replaced with a deepfake. Mr. Vitorgan himself said that he was aware of the task previously set for the creators of the series to “cut him out of there completely.”
On his Instagram page (owned by the extremist and banned Meta in the Russian Federation), Maxim Vitorgan wrote that he learned about the use of an artificial intelligence-generated image to replace his face from the Russian Cinema in the Top Telegram channel. However, he himself did not review the series and is ready to “take his word for it.”
“Thanks to the wise leaders of the holding (well, or whoever made this decision), who at least in this way entered my name in history. All these “suddenly” and “for some reason” have long been known to me. I also heard rumors that the creators of the series were given the task of cutting me out of there completely, but this turned out to be problematic. Great artistic and ideological victory!” – wrote Mr. Vitorgan.
According to Maxim Vitorgan, the decision to replace his face with a deepfake was made by the leaders of Gazprom-Media, which owns the online cinema. He also said that a couple of years ago, the leaders of the holding already demanded in one of the series to replace him with another actor.
“It was time for the main shoot. And “suddenly” and “for some reason” this very leadership demanded that I be replaced by another artist. The producers had nothing to do, and I was replaced by Tolya Bely, who left Russia shortly after filming. Well, that is also a victory,” Mr. Vitorgan said in a message.
On the day of the entry of Russian troops into the territory of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Maxim Vitorgan posted a black square on Instagram. In the message to the photo, he wrote “Shame…”.
