Speaker of the Federation Council (FC) Valentina Matvienko called for urgent action due to the growing financial hole in Russian Post. She raised this issue at a meeting of the Federation Council with the participation of the head of the Ministry of Economy, Maxim Reshetnikov. To solve the problem, the head of the Federation Council promised to contact the government.
According to her, the authorities agreed to all the proposals of Russian Post, but the financial situation of the company is “very sad.” As Ms. Matvienko claims, “everyone knows this, and no one takes action.” She wondered whether there could be “other processes” going on there that “need to be corrected with the participation of law enforcement agencies or others.”
“Well, it’s impossible, the financial hole in the Post Office is growing and growing, and no one is reacting. And we all bury our heads in the sand, thinking it will resolve. Nothing will dissolve there. There it is necessary to develop the correct model of existence and take those measures that the government and you, as the Minister of Economic Development, consider necessary. But we urgently need to correct the situation – the further we close our eyes, the worse and worse it will be,” Valentina Matvienko addressed Mr. Reshetnikov (quote from Interfax).
The Speaker of the Federation Council emphasized that mail is needed and must be preserved, but the decision must be made by the government. “We must make a decision without delaying it, without delaying it, otherwise this financial hole will turn into a huge pit where everything will fall,” Mrs. Matvienko is convinced.
In September marketplaces sent to the government a letter asking to exempt them from payments to Russian Post. We are talking about the so-called infrastructure fee: in the spring, Post proposed to collect 0.5% of quarterly turnover from online retailers, provided that the company’s annual revenue exceeds 1 billion rubles. In the end, Russian Post should receive the money, in return pledging to deliver goods throughout the country. Until 2014, Post was subsidized by the state. The authors of the letter estimated its loss in 2022 at 27 billion rubles.
