Ford workers in Canada approved a union agreement with the company – Kommersant

On the evening of Sunday, September 24, it became known that members of the Unifor union, representing the interests of workers at Ford Canada factories, supported the agreement reached by the union leadership with the employer. As they say in message union, 54% of union members supported a new three-year contract with the company.

“This contract will make profound changes in the lives of (workers.— “Kommersant”). It fundamentally changes pension plans, provides protection (for workers.— “Kommersant”) during the transition to electric vehicles and includes the highest wage increases ever negotiated in the Canadian auto industry,” union president Lana Payne said in a statement.

As already reported “Kommersant“, in accordance with the agreement, workers’ wages will be raised by 10% starting Monday. Workers will be paid a bonus: $10,000 for all full-time workers and $4,000 for temporary or part-time workers. The agreement includes improvements to all pension plans and health insurance, the addition of several paid days off, investments to support the transition to electric vehicle production, etc. The company also pledged to keep its Canadian factories open for the duration of the new labor contract.

Ford Motor is also leading negotiation with the American trade union United Auto Workers (UAW). Two weeks ago, a worker strike began at a Ford Motor plant in Michigan. At the same time, workers went on strike at GM and Stellantis plants, whose interests are also represented by the UAW. On September 22, the UAW announced it would expand the strike to 38 Stellantis and GM plants after the parties failed to reach an agreement. In the case of Ford Motor, positive developments appeared, and the union stopped protests at company factories.
