Maduro declared the disputed territory the 24th state of Venezuela

During a meeting of the Federal Council of Government, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro declared the disputed territory of Essequibo, belonging to Guyana, an “integral defense zone.” He proposed creating divisions of departments there that issue licenses for the extraction of gas, oil and minerals. The region will now be considered the 24th state of Venezuela, known as Guyana-Essequibo. This is reported by Ultimas Noticias.
Maduro also proposed banning contracts with companies operating or collaborating in Guyana’s unilateral maritime concessions. He instructed to discuss this issue in parliament.
The President gave companies involved in developments on the Essequibo shelf three months to cease operations in the undivided sea. However, he expressed his willingness to negotiate and respect international law and laws. Maduro also ordered the creation of a high commission for the defense of Essequibo, the development of a social assistance plan for the population of the region and a census, issuing identity cards to its residents. He also demanded the publication and distribution of a new map of Venezuela in educational institutions.
