Europe needs to build future relations with Russia in the “most peaceful form,” says French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Our geography will not change, Russia will remain Russia with the same borders, and we need to build a space that will allow us to coexist with the Russia of tomorrow in the most peaceful way and without any naivety,” he said at the Globsec security conference in Bratislava (quote according to TASS).
Macron also noted that the European defense policy is “an important component of NATO” and “the only means that will ensure confidence in the long term.”
“We Europeans must in the future have our own capabilities to protect ourselves and be able to build relationships with our neighbors,” the French president stressed.
In autumn 2022, Macron will also declared about the need to continue the dialogue with Russia, explaining that one should speak even with those “with whom we do not agree.” In addition, he noted that the situation when Turkey remains the only country that conducts a dialogue with Russia is contrary to the interests of France.
At the same time, in August of the same year, at the Crimean Platform summit in Kyiv, he urged show no weakness towards Russia and refuse any compromises with it. Then he promised Ukraine that France would continue to support it.
Since the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Macron has repeatedly advocated negotiations with the Russian authorities. Also, at the initiative of the French side, telephone conversations between the leaders of states took place more than once, while France continues to supply weapons to Ukraine and supports similar decisions at the EU level.
