France will supply Germany with gas in exchange for electricity, reported newspaper Le Figaro, citing President Emmanuel Macron.

“We will stand in solidarity with Germany on the gas plan if the winter is difficult and Germany needs it,” Macron said after a video conference meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. According to the President, this will require the opening of new gas terminals in two countries – several in Germany and one in Le Havre.

At a press conference on energy, Macron also noted that he “already took all measures”, including diversifying energy sources and blocking the growth in energy prices: he assured that the latter helped to avoid raising the cost of gas and electricity for the population by “about 70%” .

The head of France also stressed that “the best energy is the one that we do not consume”, and recalled that the goal of the French energy security plan is to save about 10% of consumption. “If we mobilize, we can achieve this 10 percent goal,” the president said.

On September 3, French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, said that the country was ready to work on introducing a ceiling on Russian gas prices together with Italy. The Minister called the decision on joint procurement a priority in this work, which “would allow for greater commercial influence on the supplier countries.” The second solution is to diversify the sources of supply, in particular, through the construction of new terminals for liquefied natural gas, the third is to set a gas price cap.

In 2021, France consumed about 43 billion cubic meters. m of gas. According to the International Energy Agency, Russia supplied to France annually about 14 billion cubic meters. m of gas.

At the same time, at the end of July, Nord Stream exports decreased to 33 million cubic meters. m per day, and since August 31, deliveries through the gas pipeline have been completely stopped after the detection of malfunctions in the gas-pumping turbine during scheduled preventive maintenance.
