Lithuania will consider a proposal to suspend the acceptance of applications from Belarusian citizens for a temporary residence permit. The initiative was supported by Deputy Speaker of the Seimas Paulius Saudargas, Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Defense Laurynas Kasciunas, as well as member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Audronius Azubalis.
As Delfi clarifies, it is proposed to temporarily stop accepting applications from Belarusian citizens for a residence permit in Lithuania through external service providers abroad. However, certain exceptions are provided.
Kasciunas expressed the opinion that it is important to support democratic Belarus and provide asylum to those who really need it. However, he also stressed that it is important to avoid risks and intelligence threats.
“We need to provide support to democratic Belarus, provide shelter to those who need it, strengthen the independence of this country, but we will not create Belarus in Lithuania with all the ensuing risks and intelligence threats,” Kasciunas said.
